What's happening now? First Floor Plans Second Floor Plans
Slideshow of Construction Note: all construction documents and plans are available at the library for public viewing.
September 2006 Foundation completed, interior spaces are being prepped for new HVAC and electrical space.
August 2006 Foundation walls are being poured in preparation for the structural steel.
July 2006 Construction begins, foundations cut and concrete footings poured. Interior demolition as needed. Removal of old furnace, ductwork, carpeting.
June 2006 Rene Lamarre Construction of Salem will be starting construction the week of June 7th. Click on the Slideshow for images of the project.
May 2006 Success! Ground Breaking for the new library addition and renovation was Saturday, May 13, 2006 at 1:00pm. Congratulations to all who have worked so hard to achieve this milestone!
April 2006 We have had a successful bid run--third time's the charm! The General Contractor for the building renovation and expansion project should begin in the next couple of weeks.  Stay tuned for our groundbreaking!
March 2006 We have gone out to bid on the revised plans. Filed sub-bids are due April 6th with the General Contractor bids due April 20, 2006. Bid opening will be held at Town Hall at 11:00 am on both of those days.
February 2006 New Bid documents are being prepared by our Architects to reflect the additional cuts needed to bring the cost of construction down. Some of the areas affected include removal of the "north wing" of the addition, resulting in the relocation of the Children's Program Room and Local History/Genealogy Room, elimination of the Mansard roof, semi-circular bay on the east wall of the addition, ceramic tile in the bathrooms, brick exterior, window mullions, custom built Reference Desk and Children's Information Desk.
January 2006 We are currently working on redesigning the addition for the new library. We need to bring the cost of the construction down to the money we have in hand to build. We need to cut approximately $450,000 from the designed addition. We hope to go out to bid in the Spring 2006 and anticipate construction beginning in the Summer 2006.
November 2005 All of the bids for construction were still over estimate. So we will be heading into a redesign phase.
October 2005 We open the filed sub-bids and found them slightly under budget estimate. Unfortunately, the General Contracts came in $400,000 over the Architects estimates. We have decided to change the scope of the General Contract and go out for a second bid, in the hopes of a lower bid.
Sept 2005 We have moved into our temporary location at 5 Elm Street. We are anticipating opening the construction bids and starting construction in early fall.
June 2005 We have hired a Project Manager from Design Technique, Newburyport.  Construction documents are being drawn and our budget is under constant review! Our tentative date to break ground is October 2005. We are actively seeking a location to move the library while we are under construction.
May 2005 The LBC is interviewing and hiring a Project manager.
April 2005 The architects are busy creating the bid documents needed to hire a Construction Company. The LBC is searching for a Project Manager who will act as our agent on the Building Construction Site.
January 2005 The LBC voted unanimously to accept the Schematic design (see floor plans attached) and have moved into the Design Development stage.  During the next 6-9 months, the Architects will be consulting with their subcontractors to create the bid documents and specifications needed to go out to bid for a General Contractor.
October 2004 The LBC is negotiating a contract with an architectural firm.  We should have an architect by November and be ready to start construction by Spring or Summer 2005.
June 2004 The Library Building Committee (LBC) has created an RFS, Request for Services, for an Architect to create the final designs, building specifications, and bid documents so that we can go out to bid on the construction of our new library.

Why a new library?

The current building was planned in 1898 for a population of 1900; Georgetown's current population is 7,377*. When the building opened in 1909, it had a collection of 10,413 books compared to today's collection of over 46,000 books, periodicals, CDs, Videos, DVDs, Books-on-tape, and CD-ROMs. The circulation in 1909 was 11,241; the current circulation of materials is about 36,000. Our lovely Victorian-era building simply does not have the space to meet the needs of a 21st century community. Additionally, the building is not accessible to the physically challenged and as a result is currently in violation of Federal ADA regulations.

What will a new library provide that we don't have now?

& A handicapped-accessible building with adequate parking

& A Community Center Room for arts and crafts programs, musical events, lectures and club meetings

&  More computer work stations for high-speed on-line access and word processing

& New and expanded collections

& Quiet areas for research, study and reflective reading

& Climate control for the preservation of materials and comfort for library users

& A young adult area featuring age-appropriate materials for homework, study and recreational reading

& A children's activity room separated from the quiet study areas

& Staff workspace to process and repair materials

& Adequate storage for supplies and records

& A Georgetown History genealogy/historical research Room with climate-controls for fragile and rare materials

& Modern, accessible bathrooms

How big will the addition be?

The current building has 3,600 sq. ft. of usable space. Based on a projected population of 12,000 in the year 2020, our two-story addition will add approximately 12,000 sq. ft.  This space requirement was carefully worked out in consultation with experts from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC), Library Trustees, Staff, and members of the community.

How will the project be funded?

The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners awarded the Georgetown Peabody Library a Construction Grant of $1,644,694 on January 15, 2004. The remaining balance of the estimated $4.3M project will be funded by the Town through a 20-year bond. The town voted and passed the Library Bond Override on Monday May 10, 2004.

When will construction begin?

It could be as early as Spring 2005. Now that the Town has voted to approve the funding of the Library Project, we will sign a contract with the MBLC. Once the State  accepts our contract we will receive the first 30% of our funds.  We then have a nine-month window to hire an Architect to finalize the design, interior floor plan, and draft the construction bid documents. Once we accept and sign a contract with a General Contractor, we will receive the next 30% of our funds from the State. Construction could start anytime during that nine-month window.
